Has anyone been into Garat or Crutchers crossing this year? Are the roads passable? I'd like to do the East Fork this year, but after having failed to even get to the river last year I'm hesitant to even drive south without data.

If it hasn't been raining and the roads are dry you can get in at Crutchers and Garat with a high clearance 4x4. Rickart (just above Lambert gorge) is also an option with permition from the Star ranch. Depending on the vehicle and 4x4 skills you may have to hike the last 1/2 mile down to Garat. Look at the BLM web site for updated access maps. You can also contact the Boise district BLM office to get the phone number for Star ranch, and possibly current road conditions, ask for Evan Worthington. Have a good trip.

Thanks for the response. I've driven Garat's recently, but haven't been to Crutchers in 10 years or so. I heard it has gotten pretty bad. I'll probably give it a shot this week.

Looks like it's been 5+ years since anyone talked about these roads. We're looking at putting in at Garat. Does anybody have recent information about road conditions or who is running shuttles there?
Thanks.

I just got an email from John Barker advertising a shuttle service for the East Fork and other desert rivers.

I drove in to Garat on March 23. The road was dry and in relatively good condition. There were still some deep mud puddles but you could largely avoid them. There were two rugged stretches in the last mile but a high clearance 4WD should be fine (I used my 4Runner). I had my friend get out and help direct me around the rocks. We did not drive the last 150 yards to the river and stopped when it started getting steep again (there is a fence across the top of the steep part).

We took out at Three Forks and the roads were in relatively good shape. A high clearance 2WD would work.
